About Jacksonville Zoo
In 1914, the municipal zoo first opened in the city of Jacksonville. It was originally founded in a different location than it sits today. It wasn't until 1925 when the zoo moved to its current site. The zoo had modest beginnings and struggled at times to survive. Financial issues almost lead to its closure in the 1960s.
Decades later it was running along strong though. The 1990s saw millions of dollars in donations to the zoo, enabling it to expand heavily. Nowadays, the zoo sits on about 117 acres and harbors 1,000 plants and 2,000 animals. There are a variety of excellent exhibits as well such as Birds of the Rift Valley Aviary as well as a train ride.
The zoo is also the site of other important organizations. The RiverBranch Foundation Animal Medical Center is located at the site as well as the PepsiCo Foundation Education Campus. Animal conservation is something that's very important to the zoo's mission, and the education campus certainly helps in that regard. They also participate in dozens and dozens of conservation initiatives around the country and the world.
