Sperry was founded by Paul Sperry in 1935 who wanted to solve the problem of slipping over while walking on boat decking. His inspiration for the design of the original boat shoe came from observing the paws of his pet dog. He noticed how the cocker spaniel could run on ice without slipping and decided to replicate the grooves on the dog's paw on the sole of the shoe.
When the first Sperry Top-Siders went on sale they were an immediate hit, because they really were successful in preventing boatmen from slipping. Sailors also appreciated the white color because they never left black scuff marks on the decking.
The design was so successful that the US Navy were licensed the right to manufacture Top-Siders for their sailors. Sperry then sold the business to the US Rubber Company in 40s.
The design has come in and out of fashion ever since then, but has seen a resurgence in recent years.
