About Kmart
Kmart was founded by the SS Kresge Corporation in Garden City, Michigan, in 1899. It was until 1977 that it got the Kmart Corporation name.
In the beginning Sebastian S. Kresge invested $8,000 that he saved from his work as a salesman to start his first store. He also had a partner (John McCrory) who he bought out within a couple of years, before teaming up with borther in-law Charles J. Wilson to form the Kresge & Wilson Company. Incorporation followed in 1912 and the company was named S.S. Kresge Corporation with a base of 85 stores.
It wasn't until 1962 that the first branded Kmart store opened in Garden City, Michigan.
Kmart bought out Sears in 2004. The Kmart Holdings Corporation then changed its name to Sears holdings Corporation.
