About Henri Bendel
The roots of Henri Bendel can be traced all the way back to 1895 when the man of the same name opened his first store in Greenwich Village, NYC. He sold a small number of fashion items in the beginning and began wrapping items in the iconic brown-and-white striped boxes in 1907. Bendel became the first outlet to sell Coco Chanel in 1913.
After his death his nephew expanded the business, bringing in new offerings from designers like Ralph Lauren and pioneering the shop-within-a-shop format.
The company was acquired by L Brands in 1985. It wasn't until 2008 that additional stores were opened.
